How to Check Protein Powder Purity at Home — 7 Simple Tests
Protein powder adulteration is common in India. Some brands add starch, maltodextrin, or amino spiking to inflate protein numbers. Here is how to check purity at home.
1. The Water Test (Mixing)
What it checks: Starch and filler content
How to do it:
- Take 1 scoop of protein powder
- Add to 200ml room-temperature water
- Stir with a spoon
Genuine whey: Mixes easily, slightly cloudy, thin consistency Adulterated: Thick, creamy, or clumpy — indicates starch or maltodextrin added
2. The Hot Water Test (Clumping)
What it checks: Whey protein denaturation
How to do it:
- Add 1 scoop protein to 200ml hot water (not boiling)
- Stir
Genuine whey: Protein coagulates into small curd-like particles Adulterated: Dissolves or turns into a thick paste — starch or flour present
3. The Iodine Test (Starch Check)
What it checks: Starch adulteration (rice flour, corn starch, maida)
How to do it:
- Mix 1 scoop protein with 50ml water
- Add 2-3 drops of iodine solution (available at any pharmacy)
- Stir
Genuine whey: No color change (liquid stays tan/brown) Adulterated with starch: Turns blue-black or purple
4. The Heat Test (Burnt Smell)
What it checks: Protein content (protein burns with a distinct smell)
How to do it:
- Take a pinch of protein powder
- Heat it on a metal spoon over a lighter or stove
Genuine whey: Smells like burnt hair or feathers (protein burning) Adulterated: Smells like burnt sugar or bread (starch/carbs burning)
5. The Freezer Test (Sediment Check)
What it checks: Dissolved solids and additives
How to do it:
- Mix 1 scoop protein with 100ml water
- Pour into a clear glass
- Freeze for 4 hours
- Thaw at room temperature
Genuine whey: Should not leave excessive sediment at the bottom Adulterated: Thick layer of residue — indicates fillers
6. The Taste Test (Without Flavoring)
What it checks: Raw vs flavored protein
Only works with unflavored protein:
- Genuine raw whey: Mild, milky taste, slightly sweet from lactose
- Adulterated: Bitter, chemical, chalky, or overly sweet (artificial sweeteners masking low quality)
7. The Label Test (Check Protein Percentage)
This requires no lab — just read the label.
How to calculate:
- Serving size: 30g
- Protein per serving: 24g
- Protein percentage: (24 ÷ 30) × 100 = 80%
| Type | Expected Protein % |
|---|---|
| Whey concentrate (good) | 75-80% |
| Whey isolate | 85-90% |
| Plant protein | 70-80% |
| Mass gainer | 20-35% |
Red flag: If the label shows 80%+ protein but costs the same as a 50% concentrate — something is wrong.
The Amino Spiking Problem
Some brands add cheap amino acids (glycine, taurine, creatine) to boost nitrogen content in lab tests. This inflates the reported protein number without adding real protein value.
Check the label for: “Added amino acids,” “glycine,” “taurine” in the ingredients list. Genuine whey should list only whey concentrate/isolate, flavor, and sweetener.
When in Doubt, Buy Trusted Brands
In India, look for these Trustified-certified brands that voluntarily test purity:
- MuscleBlaze — Biozyme, Raw Whey
- Nakpro — Impact Whey, Platinum Isolate
- AS-IT-IS — Atom Whey
- Nutrabay — Pure Pea, Gold Whey
- Avvatar — Performance Whey
The Bottom Line
You do not need a lab to catch most adulteration. The water test + heat test catch 90% of common fillers. If a protein fails these simple checks, return it and switch brands.
