How is BMR calculated?
We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation — the most accurate formula for the general population:
This is the minimum calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep your heart, lungs, and brain working. You burn this much every day without lifting a finger.
You'd burn 1,680 kcal just existing. That's your body's baseline operating cost.
You actually burn 2,200 kcal/day total. This is your TDEE — read below.
Eat around 2,200 kcal/day to stay at your current weight.
TDEE = BMR + the calories you burn through daily activity and exercise.
Your BMR in Real Life
Your BMR of 1,680 kcal is roughly equal to:
What Affects Your BMR?
Muscle Mass
More muscle = higher BMR. Muscle burns ~6 cal/lb/day vs fat at ~2 cal.
Size & Weight
Bigger people have higher BMR — more tissue means more fuel needed.
Gender
Men tend to have 5-10% higher BMR due to more muscle and less body fat.
Age
BMR drops ~1-2% per decade after 20 as muscle mass naturally declines.
